The Metal Powder Industries Federation (MPIF) is actively shaping the landscape for Powder Metallurgy (PM) components. In 2025, the federation announced the release of the MPIF Standard 35-AM for metal additive manufactured parts. This push towards formalizing material specifications extends to traditional sintered materials like nickel-alloyed steels. These materials, such as those per the MPIF FN-0200 standard, are defined by minimum mechanical properties including tensile strength, yield strength, and hardness after sintering. Note that the use of any MPIF standard is voluntary, and suppliers can use procedures not identified in the standards.
Sintering is a core part of the powder metal manufacturing process. Powdered metals are blended to create a suitable alloy, then compacted into a 'green compact'. This part is then sintered in a furnace at a predetermined temperature. For structural components, achieving the correct density is a primary goal. Power tool parts often use diffusion alloyed powders to reach a sintered density of about 7.0 g/cm³. Subsequent heat treatment increases wear resistance and strength. In contrast, sintered bearings typically have a density less than 6.2 g/cm³. This porosity allows for oil absorption, which is fundamental for lubrication.
This combination of material strength and self-lubrication makes sintered nickel steel ideal for HVAC applications. Components like fan bearings, blower motor bushings, and exhaust fan bearings require quiet, maintenance-free operation. The nickel-alloyed sintered steel, such as FN-0200, is heat-treatable and offers excellent toughness. This allows bearings to withstand the constant load and vibration in air handling units and range hoods. The material's quench-hardenable nature means parts can be further strengthened after sintering to meet specific structural demands.
We provide sintered nickel steel components designed to these specifications for engineers developing reliable ventilation systems.
